904L, Monel 400, and 316/316L with 2.5% min MO, meet market demands ideal for even the most challenging environments

As HandyTube Corporation expands into global markets with its seamless, stainless steel coil tube products, three corrosion-resistant metal alloys are available to withstand the challenges of diverse environments.  Industries such as marine, pulp & paper, chemical & petro chemical processing, and oil & gas exploration benefit from these types of alloys, which help avoid pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion in chloride containing aqueous environments, and provide increased strength at elevated temperatures.

904L (UNS N08094) is a high-performance austenitic stainless steel that can be strengthened by work hardening. It is a chrome-nickel-molybdenum-copper alloy with low-carbon content. 904L is used in heat exchangers, chemical processing, desalination, seawater cooling and other seawater applications. It is resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion, and it exhibits good weldability.

Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a nickel-copper solid solution alloy that can only be strengthened by work hardening. Because of its corrosion resistance in flowing seawater, it is used extensively in marine applications. M400 is resistant to sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid and is an excellent choice for applications exposed to hydrofluoric acid.

316/316L (UNS S31600/S31603) with 2.5% percent min Moly is an austenitic stainless steel with similar mechanical properties and overall chemical compositions as 316L. It is a nickel stainless steel with a higher minimum Moly content than ASTM A213, ASTM A269 and ASTM A312 316/316L minimums, which have minimum Moly content of 2.00 percent.

These high-performance alloys are available in a number of sizes, and meet customer demands by providing cost savings through high-performance and reliability.  The copper in 904L gives this alloy corrosion resistant properties which other nickel stainless steel products may not offer.  Monel 400 has high strength and toughness in varying temperatures and resists many corrosive environments. The 316/316L alloys are available with minimum Molybdenum content of 2.5%. The effects of molybdenum, also known as “moly,” are diverse.  The addition of moly to austenitic stainless steels improves corrosion resistance.

Pitting corrosion is localized attack that results in holes in metals.  Crevice corrosion is attack occurring in tight gaps between surfaces of metals, gaskets, fasteners, or mechanical surface defects.  Stress corrosion cracking describes the formation of cracks in the presence of corrosive mediums and tensile stress in the material.  Molybdenum helps reduce these effects.
